WGA & SAG-AFTRA Strikes 2023: How Will The Strikes Affect Your Favorite Shows? (Updated)

Here is the latest update on what impact the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes will have on your favorite TV and streaming shows. I'll be updating this page regularly as things change and more information becomes available.

ANIMATION
Because of the long-production cycle of most major-budget animated shows  - from script to finished episode can take as much as a year - it's unlikely any of your favorite shows will be impacted unless there is a very prolonged strike. But there are some outliers:

American Dad (TBS)
Production on the series has shut down after the core team of the show walked off the production in support of the writers strike.

Big Mouth (Netflix)
The Netflix animated series was six weeks into writing the 8th and final season of the show. It's unclear how many scripts If any) have been completed, since the room was set to run through August.

Family Guy (Fox)
Production on the series has shut down after the core team of the show walked off the production in support of the writers strike.


CABLE AND PREMIUM CABLE
American Horror Story (FX)
Production had continued through the writers strike, but production has now been halted due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Billions
(Showtime)
Production was temporarily shut down due to WGA picket lines. Production has now shut down due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and it's not clear how many episodes had been completed.

Bunk'd (Disney)
Production on season seven of the show has been suspended. Twelve of the season's 20 episodes have been completed.

Hacks (HBO Max)
Production on season three has been suspended.

House Of The Dragon (HBO)
Season two of the Game Of Thrones spin-off is currently in production in the UK and executives say the production will continue because the entire season of scripts has already been written. It will be interesting to see how that works out, because scripts tend to be regularly tinkered with during the production process. Executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have announced they will not participate in the ongoing production.

The Old Man (FX)
Production on season two of the series has been halted.

The Serpent Queen (Starz)
Season two of the show is continuing production in Paris.

Yellowjackets (Showtime)
Production on season three shut down after one day. 


DAYTIME
Live With Kelly and Ryan (ABC)
Production continues, no union writers on staff.

Tamron Hall (Syndicated)
Production continues, no union writers on staff.

The Drew Barrymore Show (Syndicated)
Production has already wrapped for the season.

The Kelly Clarkson Show (Syndicated)
The show has some union writers, but tapes episodes well in advance and has an unknown number of episodes already produced.

The Talk (CBS)
Production of new episodes has been suspended. Previously recorded episodes will air this week and part of next week.


LATE NIGHT
Gutfeld! (Fox)
No impact so far. The show's writing staff is non-union.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! (ABC)
The show will go dark this week. 

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (HBO)
Production suspended.

Late Night With Seth Myers (NBC)
The show will go dark this week. In a Zoom call with production staff today, Myers reportedly offered to help his soon-to-be unemployed staff financially in some way.

Real Time With Bill Maher (HBO)
Production suspended.

The Daily Show (Comedy Central)
Production suspended.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (CBS)
The show will go dark this week. 

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (NBC)
The show will go dark this week. Staffers are reporting they have been told by the network they won't be paid after Friday and they will lose their health insurance at the end of the month if the strike isn't resolved by then.

Saturday Night Live (NBC)
The network canceled the May 6th episode of the show, starring alum Pete Davidson with musical guest Lil Uzi Vert. According to a statement, the show will go into reruns "until further notice."

Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen (Bravo)
The show does not employ writers.


PRIME TIME BROADCAST
Abbott Elementary (ABC)
The season three writers room was set to open on May 2nd. No work done for the upcoming season.

LaBrea (NBC)
The current season has ended, but the show continued production and has completed an unknown number of episodes for the upcoming fall 2023 primetime season.

Night Court (NBC)
The current season has ended, but the show continued production and has completed an unknown number of episodes for the upcoming fall 2023 primetime season.

Quantum Leap (NBC)
The current season has ended, but the show continued production and has completed an unknown number of episodes for the upcoming fall 2023 primetime season.


STREAMING
Andor (Disney+)
Production on season two continues with scripts completed before the strike.

Big Mouth (Netflix)
The show's eighth and final season was halted six weeks into the writing process.

Blade (Disney+)
Pre-production on the series has been shot down.

Cobra Kai (Netflix)
Season six was shut down with an unknown number of episodes completed.

Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+)
Production shut down for the duration of the strike after being shut down multiple times due to picketing writers.

Emily In Paris (Netflix)
The fourth season was initially set to start in late summer or early fall, but filming has been delayed by at least two months due to the writers strike.

Etoile (Prime Video)
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino and given a two-season order by Prime Video, early production on the series has been put on hold.

Evil (Paramount+)
Production of season four has been suspended.

Good Omens (Prime Video)
According to creator Neil Gaimon, season two of the series is completed and turned into Amazon. But he won't promote it during the writer's strike.

Loot (Apple TV+)
Production was temporarily shut down due to WGA picket lines at the home where the show was being filmed. Production has been halted entirely.

1923 (Paramount+)
Production on season two has been postponed until the strike is settled.

Outer Banks (Netflix)
Production on season three has been halted due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Sinking Spring (Apple TV+)
Currently shooting premiere season in Philadelphia, although picket lines have shut down production on several occasions.

Stranger Things (Netflix)
Production on the final season of the show is suspended until the resolution of the strike.

That 90s Show (Netflix)
Production on season two was halted due to the writer's strike. In part because the show shoots in front of a live audience that requires writers to be on set.

The Night Agent (Netflix)
Writing on season two has halted due to the WGA strike.

The Penguin (Max)
Production shut down for the duration of the strike after being shut down multiple times due to picketing writers.

The Sandman (Netflix)
Season two of production was shut down after the sets were completed, but before filming had begun.

The Upshaws (Netflix)
Production has been suspended during the writers strike, with ten of the 12-episode season having been completed.

Unstable (Netflix)
The writing room for season two had been hired, but further work has been shut down due to the WGA strike.


SYNDICATED
Jeopardy 
Writing staff are WGA members. There are an unknown number of previously written script available, although the show typically shuts down for the summer. 

Wheel Of Fortune
Writing staff are WGA members. There are an unknown number of previously written script available, although the show typically shuts down for the summer. 

You Bet Your Life
Production on new episodes has been suspended, with host Jay Leno issuing this statement: "As a member of the Writers Guild for almost 40 years, I truly understand and stand in solidarity with my fellow union members. For that reason, we are suspending production of our game show, ‘You Bet Your Life’ until such time when an agreement can be reached.”
